I am getting a slight fuel leak while docked on my 2006 Yamaha F250. Could not find any leaks in gas lines - nor could marina techs. The fuel appears to be emanting from the back of the lower unit cowling below the engine compartment. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot it or has anyone had a similar issue?

Look over the the whole fuel system under the cowl for signs of leakage. If no luck, try looking while the engine is at idle, just be careful. That should reveal the source of the leak, which is running into the midsection.

Any fluids that have leaked out from the enging block would eventually get out where you are seeing it now. I am curious, though, is it just gas or does it look like there is any oil in the mix leaking out?

Like Dan said. I could be happening when you tilt it all the way up and gas leaves the fuel system. Once tilted down it makes it way back to the lowest point inside the pan (my 4 stroke Honda does it)

Another trick to do is to look at it in the dark with a flashlight as you will see any liquid throws a glare.

I can hear the CSI jokes coming but it does work as I hunted for hours on a well pump system we use to have and went out one night looking for something else in my shed and went over to look at the pump and sure enough I saw a shinny spot and sure enough it was a small crack in a pipe 4 inches from a connection on the bottom. I have done it a few more times and it works, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

Wondered the same thing - for now I have convinced myself that it is just gas - not oil - thanks for the reply!

Great tip - will give this a shot and let you know the results - will be two weeks before I get back to the boat in Michigan

Will look it over more carefully - not just at the fittings - and at night with the flashlight tip per the tips from you guys - thanks to all.

2-N-Tow:

Great question. Turned out to be some oil that had spilled - apparently from filling crankcase - was not fuel. Problem solved - thanks for making me check it more carefully.

Too true - what does that say about all of us given that it doesn't stop any of us from still boating? Maybe my wife has a suggestion or three on that...

Even on the trailer, I leak a little $$ towards her.
The boat too.

Well I can say I am lucky to have a understanding wife
When it comes to our boats . Having to take care of 3
All our lives together (almost 38) she has become use to
me calling and saying I'm not going to make it home untill tomarow and ending up being 4 . She to helps me working on them as long as it isn't fiberglassing . She also loves fishing as much as me but not offshore . I guess I caught a keeper
